SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL
Provided to the City Council CITY OFPLEASANTUN
After Distribution of Packet JUL 191016
Honorable Mayor and City CouncleMbers: .1/514__ CITY MANAGER
I am in favor of having a Costco on Johnson Drive and ask that you approve the initiative and put it on
the November ballot. It is unfortunate that people and companies have begun to use the initiative
process when they don't like the CEQA outcome. As you are aware, unlike the CEQA process, the
initiative allows the sponsors to spread misinformation as they have already begun to do.
I think there is a fair amount of self-interest in Black Ties'drive to prevent Costco from building on
Johnson Drive. After all hotels will provide significantly more business for Black Tie than would a Costco
and Black Tie stands to lose employee parking on a public street.
Many of the arguments against a Costco just don't seem to make sense. I currently shop at the
Livermore Costco and have never seen a traffic issue. Access there is very similar to what It would likely
be at Johnson Drive. Further much of that traffic is spread out through the day and not during morning
and evening rush hours.
Since many of the people who use the Livermore and San Ramon Costco come from Dublin and
Pleasanton,If anything I would expect the issue of vehicle air pollution would decrease not increase as
suggested by several people. Further the majority of the people using the Costco will be either
Pleasanton or Dublin residents since the nearby Cities already have Costcos. And those people shopping
at Costco save considerable money. The Fall 2015/Winter 2016 issue of Bay Area Consumer's
Checkbook report that Costco is 34%less expensive than Lucky and 35%less expensive than
Safeway. That Is a substantial savings for Pleasanton families.
Even though there are substantial savings, I still shop at Raley's and Safeway due to portion sizes and
convenience and would continue to do so if a Costco is built in Pleasanton. However, whether or not a
Costco is built on Johnson Drive won't change my shopping habits, only which City receives the tax
revenue and jobs, and the number of miles I put on my car.
Respectfully submitted,
Rick Von Pein
P ea; nton / CaL
Rick Von Pein
