PLE/SANTOON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
March 14, 2016
TITLE: PLEASANTON BICYCLE SAFETY FESTIVAL— MAY 1, 2016
RECOMMENDATION
Receive information regarding the Pleasanton Bicycle Safety Festival, co-sponsored by
the City of Pleasanton and Pleasanton Unified School District.
SUMMARY
The City of Pleasanton and Pleasanton Unified School District are sponsoring a Bicycle
Safety Festival on Sunday, May 1, 2016 from 12:00 - 3:00 p.m. at Amador Valley High
School's main parking lot along Santa Rita Road. The event will provide opportunities for
the community to learn bicycle and pedestrian safety skills with a youth bicycle obstacle
course and pedestrian safety course. Other activities to promote bicycle safety and healthy
living are free minor bike repairs, bike helmet fittings and giveaways, car seat inspections,
bike trivia wheel, bike-operated juice blender and music, and bike helmet decorating.
BACKGROUND
The Pleasanton Police Department and City Economic Development Department work
closely with PUSD to provide educational programs on safe travel as part of the joint
Rides to School program. Walk and Bike to School Days, Safety Valet Program and Try
Transit to School are among these programs. Alameda County Safe Routes to School
works with numerous Pleasanton schools to reinforce programs such as these with
additional campaigns including Golden Sneaker Contest, Cocoa for Carpools and
walking school buses.
It was recently requested by Hart Middle School PTA parents to have more bike safety
educational programs. Bike rodeos were a tool in the school transportation toolbox in
previous years to help educate students on safe biking habits. Since the traditional bike
rodeos are intended for elementary age children, City staff discussed options to address
both elementary and middle school age groups. A community-wide event was
considered a solution which resulted in the planning of a Bicycle Safety Festival.
Expansion of the festival to include information on pedestrian safety, crime prevention,
fire safety and prevention, car seat inspections and more, were thought to complement
the event and provide the community with valuable safety awareness.
Last year, the City of Pleasanton was recognized as a Bronze-level Bicycle Friendly
Community by the League of American Bicyclists. Community-wide events such as a
Bicycle Safety Festival is reinforcement of the City's commitment to provide bicycle
safety education and encouragement. The festival is also an effective way to kick-off
