BACKGROUND
The project consisted of preventative maintenance on seven bridges in the City. The
preventative maintenance included Methacrylate deck treatments, joint seal
replacements, repair of concrete spalls on bridge decks and railings, and the cleaning
and painting of corroded steel members. Methacrylate is a concrete deck sealant which
decreases the overall permeability of concrete, sealing and filling cracks to prevent the
direct intrusion of water that causes deterioration of the concrete bridge deck. Joint seal
replacement involves removal and installation of the seals where sections of the bridge
meet each other, and/or the roadway, to allow for expansion and contraction and other
movement of the bridge structure. Concrete spall repairs remove deteriorated concrete
from around reinforcement steel and replace it with new concrete to protect the
reinforcement steel.
The following preventative maintenance measures were performed (See Attachment 1
for location map):
1) Main Street Bridge at Arroyo Del Valle (Br No. 33C-0058): The scope of work for
this bridge included applying methacrylate deck treatment, cleaning and painting
the corroded portion of the painted steel members on the underside of the bridge,
removing and replacing existing expansion joint seals at Abutments 1 & 4 and
Piers 2 & 3, repairing spalls on the bridge deck and concrete barrier rail, repairing
exposed reinforcement on the bridge deck, and installing welded steel drainage
pipes to direct the drainage flow off of the pier supports and into the Arroyo Del
Valle.
2) Bernal Avenue Bridge at Arroyo Del Valle (Br No. 33C-0239L): The scope of work
for this bridge included applying methacrylate deck treatment, removing and
replacing existing expansion joint seals at Piers 2, 3 and 4, and repairing exposed
reinforcement on the bridge deck.
3) Valley Avenue Bridge at Arroyo Del Valle (Br No. 33C-0411): The scope of work
for this bridge included applying methacrylate deck treatment and repairing spalls
on the concrete barrier rail.
4) Hopyard Road Bridge at Arroyo Mocho - Southbound (Br No. 33C-0101L): The
scope of work for this bridge included applying methacrylate deck treatment,
removing and replacing an existing expansion joint seal at Pier 2, and repairing
spalls on the concrete barrier rail.
5) Hopyard Road Bridge at Arroyo Mocho - Norhtbound (Br No. 33C-0101R): The
scope of work for this bridge included applying methacrylate deck treatment and
repairing spalls on the concrete barrier rail.
6) Stoneridge Drive Bridge at Arroyo Mocho (Br No. 33C-0410): The scope of work
for this bridge included removing and replacing existing expansion joint seals at
Piers 2 and 3, replacing the expansion dam at Pier 3, and repairing spalls on the
concrete barrier rail.
