DISCUSSION
In January 2015, the Veterans group presented a revised design to the City that
included the following description and design elements:
Memorial Description
The Veterans group is interested in having a memorial at the cemetery due to the
serenity of the location. The memorial is designed to recognize the sacrifices of those
that served. Design elements include:
• Seven (7) monoliths
• Seven (7) 25-foot tall flag poles and eight (8) flags - including the American Flag,
POW/MIA Flag and flags representing all of the six (6) military branches
• Large center granite platform
• Two (2) entrance kiosks
• One (1) bronze sculpture of a solider kneeling
• Six (6) benches
• Six (6) service branch inserts
• One (1) red granite star
DESIGN REVIEW PROCESS
Public Art Selection Sub-committee
The design was shared with the Public Art Selection Sub-committee (PASS) at their
meeting on May 15, 2015. At the PASS meeting, the Veterans group shared their
proposed design with the committee at the Pioneer Cemetery and was able to articulate
why the elements and location site were chosen (Attachment 3).
The PASS members were able to ask specific questions to the representatives and
share initial feedback. At the conclusion of the meeting, the PASS members shared the
following feedback with staff regarding the proposed design:
PASS Feedback:
• PASS members supported the idea of the memorial
• The scale of the piece in reference to the size of the area is very important —
PASS members feel the piece, as proposed, was too grand/large for the area
• PASS members were not in favor of the star design on the ground and
recommended extending the shape of the base granite piece instead of creating
the star underneath the base
• PASS members recommend against the flag poles being permanently placed at
the cemetery. They are concerned the poles are too tall and would overwhelm
the area
• PASS members want to assure all appropriate names of the fallen on the granite
are mentioned and spelled correctly
