BACKGROUND
In November 2014, the City Council approved the Pleasanton Pioneer Cemetery Master
Plan. The Plan included the development of the following elements: a vision statement
for the Cemetery; recommendations for developing and expanding both cremation and
casket burial activities; a business plan framework; a maintenance plan; and operational
rules and regulations. The Plan also makes recommendations concerning onsite road
improvements to accommodate increased traffic, new pedestrian paths and gathering
areas, interpretive opportunities, a possible veterans' memorial, sculpture or art
features, signage, lighting and additional landscaping.
During the development phases of the Master Plan, a group of local veterans formed in
support of establishing a Veterans' Memorial at the Pleasanton Pioneer Cemetery. The
initial design concept was shared with the Pleasanton Pioneer Cemetery Task Force,
which included a statue in the center bed. As proposed, these elements fit
appropriately in their respective locations, with adequate space for viewing the statue
and for the gathering of veterans for burial services and commemorative events
(Attachment 1).
e . ,, ••
r -I Yt 1.
