2) Requests to name a park after a specific individual will be considered no
earlier than five (5) years after the individual's death.
3) The park should be named:
a. After the neighborhood in which the park is located; or
b. After a street that borders the park; or
c. After the geographic or topographic location of the park.
Staff also shared with the Commission that during the naming process for the Bernal
Community Park in 2010, the Parks and Recreation Commission had seriously
considered naming the community park, "Harding Park". At the time, the Commission
had been presented with a proposal signed by many local residents who were
interested in naming the Bemal Property after the late Warren Harding and his father
Harry Harding.
At that meeting, there were additional comments made in support of naming the park
after Warren Harding and his father, Harry Harding. They indicated that Warren and
Harry Harding had both dedicated their lives to the Pleasanton Community, had been
importance influences to the City, and had dealt with community issues using a
common-sense approach. Elected to the Pleasanton City Council in 1960, Warren
Harding served on it through 1968. During that time, he was selected by his fellow
council members to serve as Mayor from 1960-1962 and again in 1966-1968. He also
served as the Scoutmaster for the Pleasanton Boy Scout organization for more than a
decade and was the third adult leader from Pleasanton to be awarded the Silver Beaver
Award for exemplary service and dedication. They felt that naming this park after the
Hardings would serve as an example for others to serve the community and would
preserve the Harding name and the history it holds within the community. As a result,
the name "Harding" was put on a short-list for naming future City parks when discussing
the name for Bemal Community Park.
After receiving public input, the Commission discussed several different names for the
park which included Gibraltar Park, Abijah Baker Park, Baker Park, Rancho Park and
Harding Park. After much discussion, the Commission unanimously selected the name
"Harding Park" as the permanent name for the neighborhood park that is being
constructed at the intersection of Gibraltar Drive and Hacienda Drive.
Submitted by: Fiscal view: Approved by:
eve., /2
/ / iv
/UV
Susan Andrade-Wax Tina Olson Nelson Fialho
Director of Community Services Director of Finance City Manager
Attachments:
1.
