Gregory []
Gate OCT 0 5 2005
Sent: Monday, October 05, 2015 3:37 PM
To: Mayor and City Council
Subject: Downtown parking workshop
As the regional and national economies stabilize and business improves in Downtown, parking will remain a
challenge without adopting potential parking capacity solutions such as those proposed in the Two-Year
Parking Recommendations prepared by the PDA.
In the meantime, immediate steps to reaffirm parking rights on behalf of businesses and patrons may alleviate
some tension. Some obvious suggestions: 1). All downtown businesses should clearly indicate via in-store
notices, websites or social media the location of their rightfully designated parking and/or shared public parking
resources. Likewise the public needs to be reminded of the consequences of parking "abuses".
2)businesses should make certain that signage is clear and updated. AND, although it's a delicate balance
between being an ambassador and defender of one's business, passive signage accomplishes little without
enforcement.
3) Business owners, operators and employees should be reminded not to "bite the hand that feeds them" by
occupying parking resources better utilized by their own clients. Owners, operators and employees should park
offsite, away from downtown, carpool, walk, ride a bike, etc.
4). Businesses willing to share parking resources for the benefit of neighboring businesses or during events can
broadcast that flexibility through multiple avenues.
John R.
