Council Members
October 3, 2015
Page 2
able to provide what they're obligated to provide. I don't think its right for the City to approve
projects knowing it's going to create these problems and then expect everyone to defend their
property at the expense of customers and the local population(all of whom pay taxes for public
services).
There are already property owners installing Private Property—Tow Away signs, hiring security
to prevent unauthorized parking and even looking to install gates so only tenants can enter. But
even so, this isn't what most property owners want to do. I've been told by City staff that if I
have a parking problem, as a result of overflow parking from neighboring businesses, I need to
enforce my private property. I've heard similar experiences from other property owners. Is this
really how you want the downtown to develop? The City of Pleasanton is telling us to start
towing peoples cars away—and be friendly and neighborly. Maybe I'm the only one confused.
This is what we're being told by the City. I think when cars start to be towed—this problem will
quickly become center stage albeit perhaps too late as all the fences and signs will already be up
by then.
You can discuss in-lieu parking fees or hand out waivers for this or that;at this point it offers
little substance and simply kicks the can down the road again. The City should have plenty of
funds from property taxes, transfer taxes, and sales taxes to accomplish just about anything on
the PDA's recommendation list. Let's try to remember where all that money came from—
perhaps the property owners paid it through property taxes, in-lieu fees, transfer taxes or
whatever but actually every dollar came from the tenants and the businesses that seem to get very
little support. Eventually, if either the property owners don't act to protect their private property
or the City doesn't act to increase the parking those businesses will leave—perhaps for
Livermore. But,I guess that will fix the parking problem too!
I support the recommendations of the PDA. This workshop is an encouraging start but it can't
stop here.
Sincerely,
George Dunder .
Pleasanton Station II
