BACKGROUND
Through the Harrington Art Partnership, Nancy and Gary Harrington would like to
donate the Cor-Ten Steel sculpture "Goldy'; by artist Dale Rogers, to add to the City's
public art collection.
On December 6, 2011 at its regular meeting, City Council approved the purchase of
several public art pieces as part of the Harrington Public Art Acquisition Plan Phase II.
Due to the time that has passed since the original approval, several of the original
pieces are no longer available. However, the City Council has agreed to allow for
suitable replacements for the remaining six (6) pieces. As part of that agreement, the
Harringtons would like to donate "Go/dy', a Cor-Ten steel replica of a cat as a suitable
replacement for one of those pieces.
The piece is proposed to be installed at the Valley Humane Society facility located at
3670 Nevada Street. The Valley Human Society has agreed to have the piece placed
on their property. In accordance with the City's Public Art Program, "Go/dy" and its
proposed location have been approved by both the Public Art Selection Subcommittee
and the Civic Arts Commission.
DISCUSSION
Originally suggested by the Harringtons and Valley Humane Society staff, the proposed
site for the permanent location of "Go/dy' at the Valley Humane Society has great
appeal due to its high visibility and its 'approachability' by patrons and pedestrians alike.
Seeing the natural connections between the property and the art pieces, the property
owner (Valley Humane Society), has agreed and signed the City's "Letter of Intent to
Participate" agreement which states that they agree and understand the public art piece
will be placed on their property located at 3670 Nevada Street.
At its regular meeting August 31, 2015, the Civic Arts Commission reviewed the piece
and the proposed location. The Commission asked detailed questions about the
location and visibility. The Commission liked the piece and felt it would be a nice
addition to the collection as well as appropriate for the location. They unanimously
agreed to recommend placement of this piece at 3670 Nevada Street.
Submitted by: Fiscal Review: Approved
(4\__
Susan Andrade-Wax Tina Olson Nelson Fialho
Community Services Director Director of Finance City Manager
Page 2 of 3
