Consideration to Approve the Final Conceptual Plan for the New Off-Leash Dog
Park Proposed for the Bernal Property Adiacent to the Marilyn Murphy Kane Trail
Staging Area
Mr. Bocian reviewed with the Commission a PowerPoint presentation for the Off-Leash Dog
Park Final Conceptual Plan, noting that in June 2014 City Council had selected the subject site
as being a preferred site for an off-leash dog park and had authorized an agreement with
Tanaka Design Group to design the project. In October 2014 the Commission reviewed a draft
conceptual plan and provided additional comments that the Tanaka Design Group considered
when putting together the final conceptual plan.
The Commission was also advised that. on November 12, 2014 staff conducted a
neighborhood meeting at which neighbor concerns were discussed. Neighbor concerns
included the dog park being an unwelcome amenity that would devalue the overall quality of
the neighborhood, increased traffic resulting from park usage, and noise issues from barking
dogs and increased park activity.
Mr. Tanaka discussed with.Commissioners aspects of the final conceptual plan that included:
• Increasing the size of the small dog area.
• Moving the park away from the creek and neighbors and adding additional plantings.
• Using engineered wood fiber.
• Renaming the large dog are to "All Dog Area".
• Removing of tables except for one at each side of the shade structure.
• Resolving the entryway to both dog areas.
• Adding circular benches around trees to encourage people to sit in specific areas.
• Placement of dog waste containers
• Adding of amenities such as water drinking-licks for dogs, benches, bulletin board, etc.
• Splitting of the structure area with a fence between the two dog areas.
• Enclosing the dog park with 4' high black vinyl chain-link fencing.
Parks and Recreation Commission
December 11, 2014
Page 2
