In case of emergency caused by the <br /> tree being in a hazardous or dangerous condition requiring <br /> immediate action for the safety of structures or human life <br /> such tree may be removed by permission of the Director. <br /> <br /> Article 3 <br /> <br /> Preservation and Maintenance of Existing Heritage Trees <br /> <br /> Section 2-17.10. Protection of Existing Heritage Trees. All <br /> contractors, developers and owners of property with existing <br /> heritage trees shall comply with the following regulations. <br /> <br /> a. When proposed developments encroach into the drip line <br /> area ofany heritage tree, special construction to allow <br /> the roots to breathe and obtain moisture shall be required <br /> as determined by the Director. <br /> <br /> b. The existing ground surface without four (4) feet <br /> (measured horizontally) of the base of any heritage tree <br /> shall not be cut, filled or compacted. Tree wells may <br /> be used where advisable. Excavation adjacent to any <br /> such tree shall not be permitted where damage to the <br /> root system will result. <br /> <br /> c. No oil, gas, chemical, heavy construction machines or <br /> other construction materials shall be stored within ten <br /> (1) feet of any heritage tree. <br /> <br /> d. No wires, unless those needed for support of the tree, <br /> or signs other than small tree identification signs shall <br /> be attached to any heritage tree. <br /> <br /> e. The Director shall be notified by the contractor or <br /> developer or owner of any damage that occurs to a tree <br /> during construction so that proper treatment may be <br /> administered by the contractor. <br /> <br /> Section 2-17.11. Pruning and Maintenance. All pruning of heritage <br /> trees shall comply with guidelines established by the Director. <br /> <br /> Section 2-17.12. Other Tree Provisions. The provisions of this <br /> article shall supplement but not supplant other provisions <br /> of this code relating to the preservation of trees. <br /> <br />Section 2.
