MOTION: It was m/s by Cook-Kallio/Narum to waive full reading and adopt the Resolution No.
14-708 approving the Gateway Monument Sign. Motion passed by the following vote:
AYES: Councilmembers Brown, Cook-Kallio, Narum, Pentin, Mayor Thome
NOES: None
ABSENT: None
MATTERS INITIATED BY COUNCIL
Councilmember Narum requested and received Council support to look into the issue of hobby
beekeeping.
Mr. Fialho said staff would prepare a memo for the Council's review.
Councilmember Brown expressed concern over what encouraging bees in an R-1 district could mean
to those with severe allergies to bee stings.
Councilmember Cook-Kallio said she had similar concerns with the hive that was located in her yard
but learned that bees do not drop back down below the fence line until they return to their hive. She
thought information that might dispel or cement of the concerns associated with bees would be
particularly helpful.
COUNCIL REPORTS
Councilmember Narum reported that she and Councilmember Brown attended a meeting with Zone 7
and other local water retailers. Zone 7 shared projections for 2015, which indicate but of course do not
ensure that they will be able to provide 88% of the supply next year. A small roundtable discussion is
scheduled for September 22, 2014 to hopefully identify both short and long-term strategies for the
region's water supply. Zone 7 was very clear in that it views the Delta tunnels as its long-term strategy
but there did not seem to a strong sense of agreement among the retailers.
Councilmember Brown added that Zone 7 seemed fairly optimistic about the future, though they
indicated that 2015 projections were conservative. She said they would also be inviting all Tri-Valley
cities to a sit down to see what sort of regional strategies and responses to the issue can be
developed.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned a 10:59 p.m. The Council extended a
tribute to our nation's men and women serving in the military. We wish to honor the memories of those
who have died in past wars in defense of our country, including those who have died in the current
conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Respectfully submitted,
Karen Diaz
City Clerk
City Council Minutes Page 17 of 17 September 2, 2014
