THE CITY OF 1 0 rftenri CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT pLEASANTONa August 19, 2014 Community Development Engineering Division TITLE: APPROVE PLANS AND SPECIFICATIONS, REVIEW BIDS, AND AWARD CONSTRUCTION CONTRACT TO ROSAS BROTHERS CONSTRUCTION IN THE AMOUNT OF $136,060 FOR THE BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN RELATED IMPROVEMENTS -- BERNAL AVENUE (FOOTHILL ROAD TO W. LAGOON ROAD) SIDEWALK IMPROVEMENTS PROJECT, CIP NO. 145043 SUMMARY Bids have been received for the project to install a sidewalk along the south side of Bernal Avenue from Foothill Road to W. Lagoon Road. Staff is recommending award of the construction contract to Rosas Brothers Construction in the amount of$136,060. The project consists of widening the shoulder, installing a five foot wide sidewalk, a handrail, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) access ramps, and a bridge approach guardrail. The improvements will increase the safety of pedestrians crossing the Bemal Bridge and complete the sidewalk from Foothill Road to Valley Avenue along the south side of Bernal Avenue. RECOMMENDATION 1. Approve the plans and specifications for this project. 2. Review the bids received and award the construction contract for the project to Rosas Brothers Construction of Oakland, California, in the amount of$136,060. 3. Authorize the City Manager to enter into the above construction contract. 4. Authorize the Director of Community Development to approve and execute contract change orders for a contingency amount not to exceed $13,600 (approximately 10% of the construction contract), for any necessary related project work. FINANCIAL STATEMENT The anticipated total expenditure for this project is $149,921. Sufficient funding is available in the Annual Bicycle and Pedestrian Related Improvements project, CIP No. 145043.
