Recognition of Thermo Fisher Scientific for receiving a 2014 Acterra Award for Sustainability Economic Development Director described the nature of the award honoring the Thermo Fisher Scientific Pleasanton campus for its sustainability in the medium sized company category. As Acterra's highest award, it recognizes businesses whose programs achieve significant bottom line benefits for the planet, people and profits. Applicants are evaluated on the basis of leadership in field, environmental and social benefits, demonstrated commitment to sustainability, and the potential to serve as a model for the larger business community. Kenny Ross, Site Director at Thermo Scientific, said the organization is truly humbled to be among the list of award winners which have included Cisco, Hewlett Packard and Stanford University in past years. The idea of becoming a zero waste facility started as an audacious idea and became a movement supported by the entire organization. He personally thanked Blair Michael for spearheading the effort and said Thermo Fisher is happy to continue its sustainable and responsible growth in Pleasanton. Blair Michael said the effort took considerable work but demonstrates that companies can remain profitable while also doing right by the community and the environmental. 7. Presentation of a Proclamation proclaiming July 2014 is "Park and Recreation Month" Community Services Director Andrade-Wax recognized those individuals who play a significant role in the city's parks and recreation offerings that were present: Director of Operation Services Daniel Smith, Community Services Managers Michele Grose and Becky Hopkins, and newly appointed Parks and Recreation Commission Deborah Wall. She also introduced a special guest, 8 year old Anish Bhatia, who shared a bit about her favorite park in Pleasanton. Anish Bhatia read a short essay describing her love of Pleasanton's many beautiful parks, particularly Nielson Park. She explained that this is her favorite park largely due to its proximity to her home and school and the fact that the play area is divided into two sections to accommodate both older and younger children. She said that playing at the park always manages to cheer her up and showed a poster she made of herself pretending to be a ballerina. Councilmember Cook-Kallio read and presented the Proclamation. 8. Public Comment John Huk addressed the Council concerning a tree issue on his property. Ray Kutz, SF Shakespeare Festival, provided handouts regarding the upcoming festival. He thanked the city and Council for its enduring support of their efforts to make live theater available to people of all ages and socioeconomic background.
