11. Commendation for Amador Valley High School Competition Civics Team on taking second place
in national competition
Brian Ladd, team coach, thanked the Council for the honor and the community for its support
throughout this process. While Amador Valley High School has participated in We the People for the
past 25 years, with him serving as coach for the last 22, the team reached its highest achievement this
year in finishing second by only 0.8%. He invited several students to share their stories about the
journey and their experiences.
Daniel Huang said his participation on the team has taught him much about the challenges America
faces today, particularly civic education and government reform. Through this he has gained a real
appreciation for what the Council does for the community and hopes that he can one day contribute in a
similar fashion.
Jennifer Teitell said her participation on the team has been valuable for the reasons mentioned by Mr.
Huang and also because it is a rare opportunity for high school students to find themselves in a
community of others with similar passions and interests who really inspire and challenge one another.
She thanked the entire community for its support and especially Mr. Ladd for all that he has invested in
them as a team and as individuals.
Councilmember Pentin read the commendation into the record and recognized individual team
members.
12. Public Comment
David Hamm, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, invited the Council and public to join
them at the Senior Center on Monday to help celebrate Memorial Day and honor all those who were not
fortunate enough to return home from current and past wars. He announced a very special guest in
James Suzuki, a member of the honorable 442nd unit and recipient of a Purple Heart, Bronze Star with
a Combat "V and Congressional Medal of Honor. He also invited the community to attend a free
pancake breakfast on June 7d' at Delucchi Park. The breakfast doubles as a donation event to collect
goods of all kinds to be sent to the over 100 Tri Valley troops still deployed.
Councilmember Cook-Kallio noted that they accept cash and that people often overlook those items
that are more specifically used by women, who are also deployed.
Mr. Hamm confirmed. He explained that they typically ship out 200 packs at a time and, at about $11
per, the shipping costs and supplies can add up quickly.
PUBLIC HEARINGS AND OTHER MATTERS
13.
