MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC <br /> 14. Presentation of a proclamation proclaiming May as "Bike Safety and Bike to Work or School <br /> Month" <br /> Economic Development Specialist Lisa Adamos provided a preview of the month's activities, which <br /> include Bike to School Day and a regional Bike to Work Day on May 8t°with several sponsored stations <br /> and giveaways at key locations throughout town. To prepare the community for Bike Safety Month, the <br /> city has hosted helmet fittings and giveaways at local middle schools, hosted a one hour commuter <br /> workshop at Hacienda Business Park and will be hosting a free family cycling workshop at Harvest <br /> Park Middle School May 11th as well as another commuter workshop on June 7th at the senior center. <br /> Councilmember Narum read the proclamation declaring May as "Bike Safety and Bike to Work or <br /> School Month". <br /> 15. Presentation of a proclamation proclaiming May "Older Americans Month" <br /> Raymond Figueroa, Pleasanton Senior Center, said the intent of Older Americans Month is to <br /> recognize the contributions, legacy and stories of older Americans at all levels. When National Seniors <br /> Month, as it was originally known, was first recognized in 1963 only 17 million Americans had reached <br /> the age of 65. Today, that number is closer to 40 million and represents nearly 14% of the population. <br /> AARP reports that over the next 17 years, 10,000 Americans will turn 65 years old on a daily basis. He <br /> said Pleasanton should be proud of the programs and services it offers it seniors and invited Jenny <br /> Underwood, a fitness instructor at the Senior Center, to share a bit about her classes. <br /> Ms. Underwood said her three weekly Zumba classes, which incorporate more international music into <br /> the Latin inspired dance style, are very well attended. She stressed the benefits of classes such as <br /> these, which help to strengthen the heart, increase flexibility and enhance balance as well as provide <br /> an active social setting for seniors to enjoy. <br /> Councilmember Cook-Kallio said she recently saw a report highlighting the benefits of such activities on <br /> its participants, many of whom were in their 90s. She asked if Ms. Underwood had any participants of a <br /> similar age. <br /> Ms. Underwood could not say for certain but did not one participant will be turning 80 this summer. She <br /> stressed that her class is constructed in such a way that it can be modified to accommodate nearly any <br /> physical limitation. <br /> Mr. Figueroa explained that classes are open to any resident age 50 and over. In addition to Ms. <br /> Underwood's classes, which are in high demand, the center offers line dancing, yoga, tai chi, nutrition <br /> talks, weight control classes and cooking classes. <br /> Councilmember Narum read the proclamation declaring May "Older Americans Month". <br /> 16.
