Eliminate Specific Plan references to a National Register District and Federal Historic Preservation Tax <br /> Certification Program <br /> MOTION: It was m/s by Pentin/Cook-Kallio to Eliminate Specific Plan references to a National Register <br /> District and Federal Historic Preservation Tax Certification Program. Motion carried by the following <br /> vote: <br /> Ayes: Councilmembers Brown, Cook-Kallio, Narum, Pentin, Mayor Thorne <br /> Noes: None <br /> Absent: None <br /> Amend Downtown Design Guidelines to continue to discourage metal roofs, but allow metal shingles <br /> with a dull finish and muted color that resemble shake or tile <br /> Councilmember Brown said she has seen some very poor examples of metal roofs, but acknowledged <br /> that wood shake carries certain fire risks. She said she would prefer natural materials but could support <br /> something if it were designed to resemble the natural product while also minimizing safety concerns. <br /> Vice-Mayor Pentin said he did not support the amendment. He explained that he has no issue with <br /> newer metal roof styles and referred to a home on Second Street and the Firehouse Arts Center as two <br /> attractive examples. He noted there was substantial discord over metal roofing materials on the Harvey <br /> house but that the owner uses this as part of a rainwater capture system. He agreed that metal <br /> materials should have a dull finish but said that as green building moves forward there is definitely a <br /> place for metal roofs. <br /> MOTION: It was m/s by Brown/Cook-Kallio to amend Downtown Design Guidelines to continue to <br /> discourage metal roofs, but allow metal shingles with a dull finish and muted color that resemble shake <br /> or tile.
