BACKGROUND
Councilmembers serve on a variety of policy committees to advise the Council
regarding relevant issues. The new legislative committee would meet monthly, or as
necessary, to review state and federal legislation, make recommendations to the City
Council regarding formal legislative positions, and occasionally meet with subject matter
experts which may include the League of California Cities and other related
organizations.
DISCUSSION
The City desires to formalize its legislative review process and to more actively stake
positions on legislation that affect local government. The legislative cycle typically runs
from January to September of each year. The formation of the committee would allow
the City to more actively review legislation, formalize positions, and monitor progress
throughout the legislative cycle. While the establishment of the committee will formalize
the City's legislative process, it will not limit the Mayor and/or Councilmembers from
taking individual positions on state and federal legislation.
Submitted by: Approve by:
,ltuct,
aria Ojeda Nelson Fialho
Assistant to the City Manager City Manager
Exhibit A: 2014 City Council Committee Assignments
Page 2 of 2
