The Traffic Unit will be purchasing rifles which are slightly modified from standard Patrol
rifles due to limited mounting applications on their motorcycles.
• Respirator Fit Tester $9,900
Cal OSHA requires annual testing of the department's gas masks. A quantitative fit
tests the adequacy of the respirator fit by numerically measuring the amount of leakage
into the respirator. In past years the department has relied on the availability of a fit
tester from the fire department. That equipment is dated and not able to produce a
written record of the tests. Purchase of our own Respirator Fit Tester will permit the
Police Department to be self-sufficient in our annual testing, the portability of the tester
will allow for testing in various locations, and results of individual tests can be stored
electronically and as necessary printed and placed in employee training files.
• Crime Prevention Supplies $3,000
The Youth and Community Services, Crime Prevention, and DARE are seeking public
outreach campaign monies to impact front line law enforcement services. These
outreach items and materials would include items such as personal alarms, portable
door alarms, property ID dots and pens, ID and fraud protection pens, and counterfeit
detecting pens. Specifically branded items and materials with our social media tools are
effective in outreach efforts and can serve to reduce crime and enhance law
enforcement services.
• Portable/Lightweight Video Cameras $2,600
Since the Police Department has delved into social media and webcasting, it is
important to have sufficient equipment to provide the level of quality the public expects
from our department. Today's small and lightweight cameras are designed to be
strapped to individuals, equipment, etc. in an effort to obtain "action" footage. These
types of cameras would allow for recording in inclement weather without the risk of
water damage. They can also provide the ability to record the same event from multiple
angles, recorded video can be used for both promotional and training purposes.
• Police Motorcycle Emergency Lights $14,500
The Police Department's motorcycles are currently outfitted with first generation LED
lights which were introduced into the fleet in 1997. As the fleet was transitioned these
lights were transferred to new motorcycles. The latest generation of lights is
significantly brighter with a 43% increase in candela power and a wider viewing angle.
New lighting will aid in increasing the visibility of the police motorcycles while they are
being operated in emergency mode.
• Motorcycle Rifle Mounts $8,200
The mounting of rifles on the police motorcycles presents some unique challenges due
to limited space. One solution is the mounting of the rifle inside one of the saddle bags;
this is permissible on the Harley Davidson models due to the large saddle bags. The
purchase of rifle mounting kits will permit secure installation of the rifle inside a saddle
Page 4 of 5
