3
be entered for profile inspection). A sample of excavated sediments will be screened
from each unit generally using 1/4-inch mesh to inspect and recover any cultural
constituents. The Project Archaeologist will determine the sample to be screened from
each BTU based on the productivity of each test. A 1 18th inch mesh will be used to
inspect a portion of the matrix if the Project/Lead Archaeologist suspect the presence of
micro-lithics, micro-faunal remains of cultural value, potential plant remains, etc.
Representative sediment and bulk soil samples may be collected for laboratory review at
the discretion of the Project Archaeologist for possible future study if cultural materials
or putative cultural materials are exposed or suspected. Upon completion and recordation
of the archaeological investigations, all BTUs will be backfilled and wheel-rolled
compacted by the backhoe.
AUGER TEST UNITS (ATU)
Three Auger Test Units (ATU) are proposed using a hand auger with an internal diameter
of 3-inches (7.60 cm). It is expected that the ATUs will be placed near the proposed
traffic signals at the off ramp exit and Bernal Avenue (2 ATUs) with one adjacent to or
within the SB off-ramp within the area to widening (STA 294+50). The final location
and number of ATUs will be at the discretion of the Project Archaeologist and based on
the presence of underground utilities, extensive root systems, etc. which may affect unit
location and depth. All of the sediments from the ATUs will be screened through a 1/8th
inch mesh rocker screen to insure recovery of cultural materials from the small sample
obtained by the auger.
The spoils will be visually inspected for the presence/absence of cultural materials.
Standard archaeological recordation, including a written description, sediment
observation and photographic documentation, will be completed for each ATU.
Representative sediment samples may be collected for laboratory review at the discretion
of the Principal Investigator and/or Project Archaeologist for possible future study.
HUMAN REMAINS
Caltrans (510 286-6336) will be notified by Project Archaeologist once any bone has
been identified as human and Caltrans will contact the County Coroner/Medical
Examiner. If Native American skeletal remains are exposed, all appropriate provisions
provided in CHSC 7050.5 and PRC 5097.98 will be followed.
NATIVE AMERICAN PARTICIPATION
A Native American monitor will be retained to provide monitoring services during data
recovery as per the recommendations of the Native American community. The monitor
will field review the data recovery program. If Native American skeletal remains are
exposed, all appropriate provisions provided in CHSC 7050.5 and PRC 5097.98 will be
followed. Caltrans will consult with the MLD in order to determine appropriate
treatment of remains. Additionally, if the MLD requests to monitor ensuring construction
activities, the MLD or authorized representative will be retained as a monitor.
Scope and Cost Estimate-Archaeological Test Plan
Encroachment Permit 0411-NMC0671
Mitigation Plan-CA-CA-ALA-574
June 2013(Revised November 2013)
