Commissioner De Baca Martens asked for information about open auditions and the number of principal youth roles for the project. She suggested the program be opened so youth could participate in other areas. Chairperson McLane asked about a tie-in for this project with Moon-Rise and discussed advertising and promotional aspects. Livermore Valley Opera — Student Opera Performance Program, Jim Schmidt — advised that grant funding would allow Livermore Valley Opera to introduce local students to opera by bringing professional singers to Pleasanton Classrooms. He discussed the need to expose children in lower grades to opera and advised that students would be offered free tickets to attend student performances at the Bankhead Theater. Mr. Schmidt indicated that Livermore Valley Opera estimates that approximately 700+ students would be reached through this project. He discussed past challenges and the need for keeping up the energy level and manpower for bringing opera to students. Commissioner De Baca Martens discussed with Mr. Schmidt expansion of the classes and the number of students being served. She suggested Livermore Valley Opera look at providing the program to students in non-music classes. Mr. Schmidt advised that recent projects were done in school assemblies so more students could be reached. Pacific Chamber Symphony - Assembly Program for PUSD Elementary Schools— no representation. The Gatehouse Academy for Gifted Education, Inc. — enGAGE! Summer Enrichment Camp, Lynn & Bob Gatehouse — provided information about an "enGAGE! Summer Enrichment Camp 2013" project for which they were requesting funding. They advised that the Camp would be for 4th to 8th grade students and was created to provide extracurricular enrichment opportunities for Pleasanton Youth. During their first camp in 2012, 114 of the 132 youth who participated were from Pleasanton. The Commission was further advised that this program encourages creativity in students and funding requested would allow them to purchase a potter's wheels, clay, and USB/MIDI keyboards for visual arts and musical courses. Commissioner De Baca Martens discussed with Ms. Gatehouse how success of the program was measured and how it allowed students to express themselves through enthusiasm and technology. Pleasanton Community Concert Band — Program and Audience Enhancement, Les Dumas — informed the Commission that requested funds are not for any particular project, but rather for the support of projects that allow for bringing arts to people through different means, i.e. Farmers Market, etc. He discussed different ways of exposing people to the arts; participation numbers, the relationship and services provided by Valley Concert Chorale that meet aspects of the Cultural Plan.
