Marion Pavan
From: Allen Roberts [allen @rbrts.net]
Sent: Thursday, January 31, 2013 4:02 PM
To: Marion Pavan
Cc: "Planning Commissioners" mhoey @ci.pleasanton.ca.us
Subject: P12-1796 Ridgeline Definition
Marion:
I have been thinking about the proposed ridgeline definition for PP. When this was first proposed, I voiced my
concern to the Council that it needed some real world examples to see how this definition would work in
practice. At the Commission meeting of January 23, I pointed out that the majority of Pleasanton Ridge would
not meet the definition of a ridge using the "as a continuous ground line connecting a series of hills located at
their highest elevations ending at the last peak on each end of the landform at which the elevation of the
ridgeline no longer rises in elevation, and only decreases in elevation". The reason is the majority of ridge is
gently sloping to south without a "last peak" until it hits the valley floor miles away. I f the major ridge in town
doesn't qualify under the proposed definition, the definition must be fatally flawed.
At the conclusion of the Commission's discussion they directed Staff to rework the ridgeline definition and to
also consider the idea of mapping the ridges.
I have looked on the web to see how other regions have defined a ridge for hillside preservation and it seems
that most agree with Commissioner Olson suggestion that a mapped inventory be used, rather than a verbal
description. I strongly suggest the staff look at that approach.
Thank you.
Allen Roberts
Click here to report this email as spam.
