Ayes: Councilmembers Brown, Cook-Kallio, Pentin, Mayor Thorne
Noes: None
Absent: One vacancy
27. Approve appointments to various Commissions and Committees
Mr. Fialho introduced the item, stating that the Council is being asked to review, discuss and ratify the
Mayor's recommended appointments.
Councilmember Pentin asked if the City participates in the funding of the Tri-Valley Convention and
Visitors' Bureau (CVB). He said he was surprised not to see them represented on the Economic
Vitality Committee, which he thought should be rectified, but otherwise supported the
recommendation.
Mr. Fialho clarified that the City no longer provides financial support to the Tri-Valley CVB.
Vice-Mayor Cook-Kallio requested clarification on the role of a Planning Commission alternate.
Mr. Fialho said they attend every meeting but only serve as a voting member if there is an absence,
which does differ from other alternates.
Mayor Thorne noted that they do also participate in the discussion, even if not voting.
Mayor Thorne said he was very impressed with all candidates and that Pleasanton is quite fortunate to
have so many qualified individuals willing to participate.
Councilmember Brown concurred.
Vice-Mayor Cook-Kallio asked whether applicants were approached about serving in capacities other
than those for which they applied. She also reported hearing from several applicants that they had not
been notified of the Mayor's recommendations until reading the staff report.
Mayor Thorne said everyone should have been contacted. He also confirmed that he did speak to
applicants about alternative appointments if he felt they were well suited.
MOTION: It was m/s by Pentin/Brown to approve the following appointments:
Civic Arts Member Judy Wheeler
Member Heidi Massey
Alternate Stephanie Wedge
Economic Vitality
Commercial Srvcs Firm Member Dean Schenone
Commercial RE Broker Member Janice Sangster-Phalen
Professional Services Firm Member Kristen Kuse
Energy & Environment Member Robert Jayson
Member Brett Illers
Human Services Alternate Varsha Clare
Library Member Joan Niebert
Alternate Gene Litvinoff
Planning Member Greg O'Connor
Alternate Mark Posson
Youth Master Plan Oversight Middle School Parent Valerie Arkin
City Council Minutes Page 12 of 13 January 15, 2013
