site's structure, be used to create outdoor living space, utilized to frame desired <br />views, to screen unwanted views, and to provide privacy. <br /> <br />Individual trees and tree clusters should be selected to mitigate local microclimate <br />conditions, including the provision of summer shade, and seasonal wind protec- <br />tion. <br /> <br />Flowering and fruiting trees are encouraged, as are trees that are native to the <br />Vineyard Avenue Specific Area and/or adapted to a Mediterranean climate. Or- <br />chard type planting patterns are encouraged in some rear and/or side yard areas. <br /> <br />Residential trees should be a minimum 15-gallon size with at least 50-percent of <br />the trees being a minimum of 24-inch box-size. <br /> <br />3. Other Residential Lot Plantings <br /> <br />Plant materials should be complementary to the Vineyard Avenue Corridor Spe- <br />cific Plan setting. Native plants or plants adapted to Mediterranean-like climates <br />are encouraged. <br /> <br />Plantings should be relatively simple in arrangement and character. The massing <br />of shrub and perennial plantings is encouraged. <br /> <br />Lawn plantings should be carefully used to play a specific ihnctional or visual <br />role. No more than 40 percent of the entire front yard landscape area should be <br />lawn planting. <br /> <br />Flowering or plantings in pots and/or containers are encouraged. Potted plants <br />should be used to soften large paved areas, to create accents at building entries, <br />and to transition between built and landscaped areas. Pots should be properly <br />scaled, and complimentary to the style, color, and materials used in the building <br />architecture. <br /> <br />4. Landscape Details and Materials: <br /> <br />a.
