BACKGROUND
The Sidewalk Maintenance project is an annual City program. The City's Streets
Division identifies sidewalk areas that are potential tripping hazards and the City's ADA
(Americans with Disabilities Act) Compliance Committee recommends locations for
improvements. The City of Pleasanton's Engineering Division considers safety
improvement, priority, proximity to other locations requiring work, scheduling of other
street projects, and available budget when prioritizing locations to be improved each
year.
This project consists of removing and replacing 7,990 SF of sidewalk that presents
potential tripping hazards, 70 LF of curb and gutter that has cracks and drainage
problem and installing 12 new intersection ramps for ADA accessibility near sidewalk
repairs. This year's improvements will take place near Civic Park and the surrounding
areas, Hansen Drive, Hopyard Road between Valley Avenue and Hansen Drive and
Division Street near Del Valle Parkway.
DISCUSSION
Bids
The engineer's estimate for the project was calculated at $95,000. Sealed bids were
opened on October 9, 2012. Six bids were received that ranged from $95,301 to
$181,734 (see Attachment 2). The low bid was received from Nor-Cal Concrete
Company, Inc. of Suisun, California. All bid documents were found to be in order and
past work performed by Nor-Cal Concrete was verified to be satisfactory. Staff
recommends award of the construction contract to the lowest responsible bidder, Nor-
Cal Concrete Company, Inc.
Budget
Staff recommends that the contingency amount for this project be set at 15% of the
construction contract due to potential expansion of project limits due to defects that may
become apparent during the demolition phase. A summary of funding arid estimated
expenditures is presented in Attachment 3.
Schedule
The proposed schedule for the project is as follows:
Approval of Plans and Specifications/Award of Contract November 20, 2012
Start of Construction January 2012
End of Construction March 2012
