Ayes: Councilmembers Cook-Kallio, McGovern, Sullivan, Thorne
Noes: None
Absent: Mayor Hosterman
MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
14. Presentation of a Proclamation designating the week of September 24, 2012 as "Pleasanton
North Rotary" Week
Councilmember Cook-Kallio introduced Tina Case, Pleasanton North Rotary (PNR) President.
Ms. Case thanked the Council for the proclamation, which helps to commemorate PNR's 25 years of
service to the Pleasanton community and to promote the Starry Night Fundraiser on September 29,
2012. She described PNR's local and international accomplishments and said the event, backed by
generous sponsors and donors, is the vehicle by which PNR is able to provide these services.
Councilmember Cook-Kallio read the proclamation designating the week of September 24, 2012 as
"Pleasanton North Rotary" Week into the record.
15. Public Comment
Jeanette Cardenas said she is one of many Castlewood workers who have been locked out of their
jobs for the last two and a half years. She reported that the National Labor Board ruled this week in
favor of her and her coworkers, stating that the lockout is illegal and recommending that Castlewood
allow them to return to work with payment of back wages and to remove all illegal proposals from the
bargaining arena. She acknowledged Castlewood's ability to appeal the decision and asked that the
Council and community urge Castlewood to allow them to return to work while keeping negotiations
open. She invited the public to show their support by attending tomorrow's march outside of
Castlewood.
Alejandro Tlatelpa, as translated by Ms. Cardenas, thanked the community for its support. He explained
that as a result of the lockout, he has been unable to provide his family with healthcare benefits and is
concerned that he may not be able to support his daughter's educational efforts. He asked that the City
continue the support it has shown thus far.
Councilmember Sullivan thanked Ms. Cardenas and Mr. Tlatelpa, congratulated them on the good
news, and commended them on their courage in standing up to Castlewood for so long. He urged the
management at Castlewood to put an end to this, allow these employees back to work, and to put this
behind the community.
Cathe Norman read the names of the 58 American military killed in Afghanistan since the last reading.
She stated that this brings the total count of American military lost this year to 237.
Fred Norman said the public's unwillingness to put an end to these wars is a modern occurrence of the
Genovese Syndrome and demonstrates a complete lack of responsibility for the horrors that we create
and support. He restated his proposal for a Pleasanton peace commission for the benefit of those
Councilmembers who were not present at the last meeting. He asked that both they and the citizens of
Pleasanton share their feelings on the matter.
Councilmember Cook-Kallio noted that while she was not physically present, she participated in the last
meeting via conference call and did hear his proposal.
City Council Minutes Page 3 of 19 August 21, 2012
