BACKGROUND
On December 29, 2009, Nancy and Gary Harrington met with Civic Arts staff to present
their idea for a 10-year plan to add to Pleasanton's public art collection by the
acquisition or commission of several sculptures — including two (2) murals.
To date, Nancy and Gary Harrington and/or their co-donors have acquired and donated
seven (7) sculptures to the City: "Spiral Motion III," by artist Jon Seeman, located
southeast of the Firehouse Arts Center building; "Joyful Play," by artist Dominic
Benhura, installed in front of Chase Bank on Main Street; "Dancers," by artist Greg
Hawthorne, installed on the grounds on the east side of the Firehouse Arts Center
building, "Special Friends," by artist Carol Dunford-Jackman, installed on Main Street at
Civic Park, "Eternity," by artist James Hunolt, installed at the Firehouse Arts Center,
"Comet" by artist Max DeMoss, installed at the Firehouse Arts Center and "Windsong"
by Greg Hawthorne, currently being commissioned and will be installed at the northern
end of Centennial Park in August/Sept 2012.
Current selection: On July 20, 2012, City staff and designated representatives from
the Civic Arts and Parks and Recreation Commissions, and the Pleasanton Downtown
Association, met as a "Selection Subcommittee" to consider the artwork that Nancy and
Gary Harrington had proposed on behalf of Bob and Marilyn Athenour for the addition to
the City's public art collection. In considering the artwork, the subcommittee applied the
selection criteria noted in the Downtown Public Art Master Plan, as well as additional
"nuts and bolts" criteria suggested by staff (the City Engineer and City Landscape
Architect). After carefully considering and discussing the artwork, the subcommittee
unanimously agreed that they felt the piece met the criteria for addition to the City's
collection.
At its regular meeting on August 6, 2012, the Civic Arts Commission reviewed and
approved the piece Joyful Empowerment for addition to the Public Art Collection.
While possible installation locations for the artwork was discussed by the subcommittee,
no specific location has been determined as yet, and the Civic Arts Commission will be
asked to address that matter upon the acquisition of the piece.
DISCUSSION
Following the success of Phase One of the Harrington Public Art Acquisition Plan, the
Civic Arts Commission, Nancy and Gary Harrington, and City staff are requesting that
the City Council review and give its final approval for the acquisition of the public art
piece, "Joyful Empowerment" identified in Attachment 1. If approved and later acquired,
the Commission will formally recommend to the Council a permanent location for the
artwork.
