BACKGROUND
Nancy and Gary Harrington have graciously donated the vibrant abstract sculpture
"Wind Song" by artist Greg Hawthorne, to add to the City's public art collection. Last
year the sculpture was reviewed and approved by the City's Public Art Selection
Subcommittee (PASS). On January 13, 2012, PASS met again and discussed the
location for the piece.
"Wind Song" is a multi-colored abstract piece depicting a wind surfer. The artist
recommends that the piece be placed in an open area so as to add to the illusion that it
is floating on water. Originally suggested by the Harrington's, the proposed site for the
permanent location of "Wind Song" in Centennial Community Park has great appeal due
to its high visibility and its 'approachability' by pedestrians. If approved, the sculpture
will be installed on a concrete pad with up-lighting. Both the Parks and Recreation
Commission and Civic Arts Commission as well as City staff, all believe that the
proposed location will showcase this piece.
At its meeting on April 16, 2012, the Parks and Recreation Commission approved the
proposed location for "Wind Song" in Centennial Community Park. Members of the
Commission generally felt that the location was "good." At its meeting on May 11, 2012,
the Civic Arts Commission also approved the proposed location in Centennial
Community Park.
Submitted by: Fiscal Review: Approve by:
Susan Andrade-Wax Emily Wagner Nelson Fialho
Director of Community Services Director of Finance City Manager
Attachments:
1.
