BACKGROUND
Through the Harrington Art Partnership, Nancy and Gary Harrington have graciously
donated the bronze and silver sculpture "Comet," by artist Max Demoss, to add to the
City's public art collection. Last year, the sculpture was reviewed and approved by the
City's Public Art Selection Subcommittee (PASS), the Civic Arts Commission, and the
City Council. In January 2012, PASS approved the recommended location at the
Firehouse Arts Center.
DISCUSSION
Originally suggested by the Harrington's, the proposed site for the permanent location of
"Comet" at the Firehouse Arts Center has great appeal due to its high visibility for art
patrons and its 'approachability' by pedestrians. At its January 13, 2012 meeting, the
Public Art Selection Subcommittee noted that the Firehouse location seemed "perfect"
and "natural" and it was pleased that the sculpture's pink granite base was
complementary to the granite benches on-site, and the "Eternity" art piece installed on
the Railroad Avenue side of the building. If approved, the sculpture would be installed
in the alcove east of the entrance doors on the rear side of the building, near the wood
exterior of the building. The Harrington's, the City's art conservator, and City staff, all
believe that the proposed location and installation details will showcase the artwork.
At its regular meeting on April 2, 2012, the Civic Arts Commission also approved the
proposed location at the Firehouse Arts Center and felt the location was "appropriate
and very good."
Submitted by: Fiscal Review: Approve by:
Susan Andrade-Wax Emily Wagner Nelson Fialho
Community Services Director Director of Finance City Manager
Attachments:
1.
