Tri-Valley Haven, Vicki Thompson — Funds Requested: $20,000 for Counseling and Temporary
Restraining Order Clinic — Ms. Thompson thanked the Commission for its past support and
hoped it would consider approving the recommendation proposed in Alternative B. She advised
that funding this request would help Tri-Valley Haven provide a unique service to the Tri-Valley
through its domestic violence and restraining orders programs.
Tri-Valley Haven, Samantha Burrows — Funds Requested: $20,000 for Sojourner House
Homeless Shelter — thanked the Commission for its past support of the Sojourner House
Homeless Shelter and the Food Pantry program.
Commission comments and questions asked of the representative included:
• How Tri-Valley Haven is coordinating with Open Heart Kitchen on the Food Storage
project.
• The prioritizing of Tri-Valley Haven projects, should funding not be made available for all
of them.
• The increasing needs in the City of Pleasanton for services provided by Tri-Valley Haven.
Chairperson Rowland closed the meeting for agency presentations at 5:00 p.m.
Chairperson Rowland discussed the total sum recommendations made by Commissioners
through the ZoomGrants program, and Commissioner Roby asked staff to explain why some
recommendations were larger than the amounts that had been requested.
Commissioner Nagler felt the principal for allocating funds should be what is seen as a
Commission priority, or by separating what has been submitted. He felt that the Commission
should establish priorities so it can make an impact within specific areas in the community.
Commissioner Roby indicated he felt differently and was more inclined to allocate funds based
on basic life needs and people needing the support. He felt it was okay for the Commission to
suggest priorities, but that they should also recognize that many requests flow into others.
Commissioner Berger felt the City of Pleasanton Loan Repayment should be taken out of the
equation inasmuch as the City is already committed to paying that amount from its FY 2012
grant. She agreed with the comments made by Commissioner Roby and thought some
agencies had not applied for funding because they felt their programs did not fit into specific
criteria. Commissioner Berger felt the grant program was a community support network.
Commissioner Wright discussed case management and thought the Commission should be
looking at the entire picture of funding requests.
Commissioner Nagler indicated he understood Commissioner Roby's comments regarding
prioritization and recommendations.
Commissioners commented on agencies that had applied for funding in FY 2011/12, but not for
this current funding cycle.
Human Services Commission Minutes
March 7, 2012
Page 4
