BACKGROUND
Through the Harrington Art Partnership (Another Harrington Arts Partnership Piece for
You), Nancy and Gary Harrington have graciously donated the granite sculpture
"Eternity," by artist Jim Hunolt, to add to the City's public art collection. Earlier this year,
the sculpture was reviewed and approved by the City's Public Art Selection
Subcommittee (PASS), the Civic Arts Commission and the City Council. The sculpture
is now in the City's possession and is being temporarily stored at the Operations
Services Center. Although the sculpture was approved for addition to the City's
collection, its location was not determined.
DISCUSSION
Originally suggested by the Harringtons, the proposed site for the permanent location of
"Eternity" at the Firehouse Arts Center has great appeal due to its high visibility for
patrons of the arts and its 'approachability' by pedestrians. When the proposed location
was reviewed by the Public Art Selection Subcommittee on October 5, 2011, they noted
that it seemed a "perfect" and "natural" site for the artwork, and they were pleased that
the color of the red granite base for the sculpture was complementary to the granite
benches on-site. If approved, the sculpture will be installed in the alcove west of the
ticket office, near the brick exterior of the building.
The Civic Arts Commission reviewed and approved the location at its regular meeting
on November 7, 2011. The Harringtons, the City's art conservator, artist Jim Hunolt,
and City staff, all believe that the proposed location and installation details will
showcase the artwork.
Submitted by: Fiscal Review: Approved by:
S a t"+ toi K/tV
Susan Andrade-Wax Emily Wagner Nelson Fialho
Director of Community Services Director of Finance City Manager
Attachments:
1.
