Councilmember Sullivan recognized the many contributions Bruce Fiedler, retiring after providing 26 years of service to the Pleasanton Gardens and the Pleasanton senior community, and presented him with a commendation. Mr. Fiedler provided words of thanks for the recognition and acknowledged the many organizations in Pleasanton that contributed towards the Gardens' success in affordable elder housing. 20. Proclamation of"Hot Rod Week" and recognizing the 25th Anniversary of Goodguys Rod & Custom Association Councilmember Sullivan presented a proclamation to Marc Meadors, Vice President, Event Operations, recognizing the 25th Anniversary of Goodguys Rod & Custom Association Week August 22-28, 2011. Mr. Meadors described the Goodguys' activities during the car show week and the popularity of Pleasanton, which he considers the car show mecca of the United States. 21. Public Comment Melanie Sadek, Executive Director, Valley Humane Society, reported raising over $280,000 three weeks ago after having sent out an SOS (Save our Shelter) to the community. She commented on her role to change their business model to ensure success and not rely solely on donations, and as a non-profit and no kill shelter, they need the Tri-Valley's support and volunteerism for their new facility on Nevada Street. Donations can be sent to Valley Humane Society, 3670 Nevada Street. They also have a PAW Program where individuals can send donations every month or to be part of the $50/500 Club being initiated, where attempts are being made secure 500 people to donate $50 a month. Kevin Magna, Catalyst Events, said he was a promoter behind the Fast and Furious in downtown Pleasanton and gave a brief recap of the event, which he said was a huge success. He recognized City employees, the Pleasanton Downtown Association, the 750 runners, 555 cyclists, over 230 kids in their bike and run events, and 3,000 to 5,000 spectators who helped raise awareness for ALS. He discussed their partnering with businesses, public outreach, marketing, lessons learned, future goals, and thanked everybody for their participation. Christine Steiner thanked the Council on behalf of Alameda County's Commission on Aging for a small donation in terms of providing signs and for their 10th Annual Healthy Wealthy Fair at Chabot College. Over 1,000 seniors attended the event. She thanked each County Supervisor for their$1,500 donation to pay for buses, and noted the diverse event included hula dancers, Korean choir, free screenings for seniors, and she hoped for future City donations towards signage. Kathy Dowding stated that the total cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to Pleasanton taxpayers since 2001 is$562 million, $6 million more than last month. She read the names of 67 American men and women killed there in the last month, 31 of which were killed all together on August 6th which totals more than 6,200. She invited the public to join Pleasantonians for Peace at its next peaceful protest on August 24th at 5PM and its next peace vigil on September 14th at 7PM. Karen De Baca Martens shared an email that contains a picture of attendees to the January l8'h Council meeting, which she said has been altered, and questioned free speech issues. Vice-Mayor Cook-Kallio asked for comment by the City Attorney. Mr. Lowell said he has not analyzed the situation, but said the picture was taken of people at a public meeting in a public place and he did not see a problem with it being taken. Regarding altering of the picture and posting it on the Internet, there is a free speech right to do this and no way to regulate it. David Miller indicated that he took the picture using his cell phone and did not alter it but simply made annotations to it. He said it is a free country and that he can bring people out with him to support his cause. PUBLIC HEARINGS AND OTHER MATTERS 22.
