Chairperson Nagler questioned whether the Commission required staff to bring back any
additional information. Mr. Bocian indicated that an educational process on the new roles would
need to be addressed.
Chairperson Nagler suggested the Commission take a 10-minute break. The meeting
resumed at 8:50 p.m.
6. Receive Update on Refrigeration Project and Discuss Funding Allocation
Ms. Yurchak noted that at the June 15, 2011 meeting, the Commission had discussed the
centralized refrigerator/freezer storage project ("The Project") and the Commission's allocation
of $11,973 at the March 2, 2011 Housing and Human Services FY 2011/12 grant application
review meeting. At the meeting, Linda McKeever, Executive Director of Open Heart Kitchen,
provided information about the collaboration of a number of agencies on "The Project," unit
costs, possible site locations, project timeline, total project costs, and the Commission's role in
"The Project." The Commission also selected a subcommittee of three (3) Commissioners and
suggested that collaborating organizations take responsibility for fundraising, grant writing, and
developing an agreement for joint use.
Ms. Yurchak advised that a site location at the City's Operations Service Center on Busch Road
has been identified. Site improvements would be needed and have been quoted as upwards of
$20,000. Ms. McKeever agreed with the suggested site location and noted that no
neighborhood issues would be encountered. She provided additional information about the
refrigerator/freezer units, noting that three (3) separate units were being recommended. Ms.
McKeever informed the Commission that Safeway had agreed to support a fundraising effort for
"The Project" at the grand opening of their new store on Bernal Avenue. Safeway is excited
about featuring "The Project" at this event. Chairperson Nagler suggested contacting a local
architect to provide a rendering of this project for display at the grand opening.
Commissioners discussed the unit costs with Ms. McKeever, who advised that the total cost
would be approximately $60,000. Since it is likely that funds will not be available to purchase all
units at the same time, she indicated that she would prefer to purchase the freezer first, then the
refrigerator, followed by the dry goods unit.
Access to the proposed project site was discussed and Ms. Yurchak and Ms. McKeever advised
that access cards would be provided by the City to specific agency representative's access.
A motion was made by Commissioner Roby, seconded by Commissioner Berger, to approve the
selected site at the City's Operations Service Center on Busch Road for the centralized
refrigerator/freezer storage project.
ROLL CALL VOTE:
AYES: Commissioners Berger, Lambert, Roby, Rowland, Wilson, Wright, and Chairperson
Nagler.
NOES: None
ABSENT: None
ABSTAIN: None
Human Services Commission Minutes
August 17, 2011
Page 7
