BACKGROUND
The policy for determining permanent names for parks, as established by City Council
on April 20, 2004 (Resolution No. 04-019), calls for the Parks and Recreation
Commission to hold a Public Hearing and submit its recommendation, along with all
names considered, for final approval by the City Council.
Section 3 of Resolution 04-019 contains criteria for establishing permanent names for
parks, recreation facilities and other City-owned public facilities. As it pertains to the
naming of neighborhood parks, the criteria are as follows:
1) The name should provide an easy, recognizable reference for City residents
and visitors.
2) Requests to name a park after a specific individual will be considered no
earlier than five (5) years after the individual's death.
3) The park should be named:
a. After the neighborhood in which the park is located; or
b. After a street that borders the park; or
c. After the geographic or topographic location of the park.
Although the 2008 Master Plan refers to the neighborhood park site as the "Staples
Ranch Neighborhood Park (T)," the name for the park has not been formally adopted.
The approximately 5-acre neighborhood park will integrate a necessary storm-water
detention basin with a pedestrian plaza, two tennis courts, a small parking area, a
restroom, picnic tables, benches, landscaping, and a perimeter walking/jogging path.
DISCUSSION
To assist with the park naming process, staff developed several potential names for
consideration by the Parks and Recreation Commission at the Public Hearing held on
June 9, 2011:
• Staples Ranch Neighborhood Park
• Stoneridge Park
• Stoneridge Creek Park
• Eastside Park
• Arroyo Mocho Park
• El Charro Park
• Harding Park
Notices regarding the Public Hearing were mailed to interested parties on the Staples
Ranch mailing list, and the Public Hearing was held to consider additional park names.
Additional names submitted by members of the community included:
• James Lindskog Park
• Veterans Park
• Staples Ranch Park
