BACKGROUND
The City of Pleasanton's landscaped areas include a range of amenities and facilities
including:
• 17 Community Parks — 241 acres
• 25 Neighborhood Parks — 140 acres
• 75 acres of Median landscape
• 11 open space areas — 810 acres
• Fire Station 4 — 3.3 acres.
To assure that these landscaped areas are maintained in proper condition, the City
using a number of maintenance sources including City employees, contract
landscapers, private vendors for supplies, and as needed service contractors for repairs
to structures. Determining the appropriate maintenance source is conducted by City
staff based on a range of indicators including, cost, expertise with specific technologies
and equipment and availability. Over the past few years the City has used landscaping
firms to perform maintenance in various medians and City parks as a means of allowing
City employees to focus on high use and visibility areas of City parks requiring
specialized maintenance.
As part of staff's analysis for contracted services it determined it beneficial to have one
bid process for median work and areas with limited park space, such as the Park and
Ride lot on Johnson Drive, and another for specialized mowing and edging services as
these services may attract different firms with different level of expertise. Both bids
were conducted during June and July with a total of ten firms responding to the median
maintenance bid and six firms responding to the mowing and edging bid. Staff
interviewed the finalists and has identified Tree Sculpture the most qualified for median
services and Sycamore Landscaping most qualified for mowing and edging services.
Due to the amount of time required for preparation of the work, staff anticipates both
firms will begin work on October 1, 2011.
Sub e• / Fiscal Review: Approved by:
Ay/ ci
Daniel S ith Emily Wagner Nelson Fialho
Director of Operations Services Director of Finance City Manager
Attachments
1.
