BACKGROUND
The Sidewalk and Access Ramp Installations project is an annual City program. The
City's ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) Compliance Committee identifies and
recommends locations for improvements that do not meet current ADA standards for
existing crosswalk areas. The City of Pleasanton's Engineering Division considers
safety improvement urgency, proximity to other locations requiring work, scheduling of
other street projects, and available budget when selecting locations to be improved
each year.
This year's project consists of: removing and replacing two intersection ramps; installing
22 new ramps along Raven Road, Crestline Road, and Springdale Avenue; removing
and replacing damaged sidewalks that are tripping hazards, and curb and gutter that
either has cracks or drainage problems at various locations in the City (see
Attachment 1).
DISCUSSION
Bids
The engineer's estimate for the project was calculated at $109,000. Sealed bids were
opened on July 26, 2011, with a total of eight bids received that ranged from $101,440
to $151,825 (see Attachment 2). The apparent low bid was received from AJW
Construction of Oakland, California. All bid documents were found to be in order and
past work performed by AJW was verified to be satisfactory. Therefore, staff
recommends award of the construction contract to the lowest responsible bidder, AJW
Construction.
Budget
Project funding and estimated expenditures are presented in Attachment 3 to this
report. Staff recommends that the construction contingency amount for this project be
set at 20% of the construction contract due to potential expansion of project limits due to
latent defects that will become apparent during the demolition phase.
Schedule
The proposed schedule for the project is as follows:
Approval of Plans and Specifications/Award of Contract August 16, 2011
Start of Construction September 2011
End of Construction October 2011
Submitte by: Fiscal Review: Approved by:
I
Brian Dolan Emily Wagner Nelson Fialho
Director of Director of Finance City Manager
Community Development
