MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC <br /> 15. Presentation of Commendation recognizing Colonel Christopher R. Buescher on his <br /> retirement of the United States Marine Corps <br /> Councilmember Thorne introduced and presented a commendation to Colonel Buescher, <br /> congratulating him on his retirement of the United States Marine Corps. Colonel Buescher <br /> thanked the City Council and the people of Pleasanton for the support of him and his family. <br /> 16. Presentation of Commendation recognizing Robert L. Vannatter as the recipient of the <br /> French Legion of Honor medal <br /> Councilmember Thorne introduced and presented a commendation recognizing Robert L. "Van" <br /> Vannatter as the recipient of the French Legion of Honor medal for his role in the liberation of <br /> France. Mr. Vannatter thanked the City Council for the recognition and said the event has <br /> brought together many relatives and friends for which he is grateful. <br /> 17. Presentation of Proclamation proclaiming July "Park and Recreation Month" <br /> Councilmember Thorne read and presented a proclamation to Parks and Recreation <br /> Commission's Vice Chair Jack Balch, recognizing July as "Park and Recreation Month. Vice <br /> Chair Balch thanked the City Council for their support and recognition. <br /> 18. Presentation of Proclamation proclaiming American Cancer Society Paint Our Town <br /> Purple Day for the 2011 Relay for Life <br /> Councilmember Thorne read and presented a proclamation to John Swagger, Relay for Life <br /> Event Volunteer Chairperson, Florine Johnston, Event Chair, and Larry Coy, On-Line Event <br /> Chairperson, proclaiming July 1, 2011 as American Cancer Society Paint Our Town Purple Day <br /> for the 2011 Relay for Life. Ms. Johnston described details of the event to be held July 23 and <br /> 24, 2011 at the Pleasanton Middle School, with the goal to raise $100,000. <br /> 19. Public Comment <br /> Robert Gray said he presented an idea for residential wind energy 9 months ago to the Council <br /> and is working on a text amendment to a City ordinance, the process of which has been delayed <br /> at the Planning Commission level, and asked that the Council investigate the matter. <br /> Councilmember Sullivan asked staff for a status update. City Manager Fialho reported that the <br /> Council's direction was to send the matter to the Committee on Energy and Environment and <br /> fold it into the Climate Action Plan as a work item to be implemented over the next several <br /> years. This is the first complaint he has heard and will follow-up with staff and Mr. Gray directly. <br /> Kathy Dowding stated that Pleasanton taxpayers have contributed $550 million to the wars in <br /> Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001, $6 million of that within the last month. She read the names of <br /> the 57 American men and women killed there in the last month.
