BACKGROUND
In 2010, staff recognized that the advent of the Firehouse Arts Center would result in a
large increase in the number of presenting programs and theater productions that would
exceed the capacity of the existing Civic Arts staff. Therefore, collaboration with a
theatrical production company that could offer an extensive and proven track record in
the production of theatre performance and education for youth and family audiences
would be vital to the overall success of the Firehouse Arts Center.
As a result, staff conducted a Request for Proposal process to select an experienced
professional theatrical production organization/company to provide a series of high
quality theatre programs for the community that included:
• A summertime outdoor theater production; and
• A series of three (3) youth and family-oriented theatre productions.
The RFP was sent to ten (10) professional Bay Area theater companies, all known for
their professionalism, quality of work, and youth programming. San Francisco
Shakespeare Festival was selected based on their proven track record in the production
of theatre performance and education that appeal to both youth and family audiences
alike.
DISCUSSION
This past season (2010-11), the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival was a vital part of
the success of the Firehouse Arts Center. The three (3) productions included: "James
& the Giant Peach," "the Princess and the Pea," and "Rebecca of Sunny Brook Farm."
A total of 142 local young people were cast and participated in the productions. Another
4,600 people attended the performances, with over 2,500 school children attending the
School Matinee productions
Given the very high quality of their work and their familiarity with the Civic Arts facilities
and programs and their outstanding relationship with the community, staff is
recommending that the contract be renewed for FY 2011/12.
Submitted by: Fiscal Review: Approved ,y:
Susan Andrade-Wax Emily Wagner Nelson Fialho
Director of Community Services Director of Finance City Manager
Attachment
1.
