THE CITY OF
05
CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
pL EASANTON®
January 18, 2011
Community Development
Planning Division
TITLE: PRZ -56, CONSIDER AMENDMENTS TO THE PLEASANTON
MUNICIPAL CODE TO ALLOW BASEMENT SELF - STORAGE FOR THE
PUBLIC IN COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS AS A PERMITTED USE WITHIN
THE DOWNTOWN, CENTRAL - COMMERCIAL ZONING DISTRICT
SUMMARY
Basements of commercial buildings are typically utilized by the business
occupying the building for storage purposes. Ed Churka has requested to allow
the basement of his building at 780 Main Street to be rented to the general public
for the storage of non - hazardous materials. Currently, the Pleasanton Municipal
Code does not allow storage facilities for the public in the C -C District, the zoning
of 780 Main Street and most of the commercial Downtown area, and only allows
basement space in buildings to be utilized by the tenants within the building.
Staff believes that with appropriate performance standards, basement self -
storage for the public in Downtown commercial buildings would be appropriate
and has drafted proposed amendments of the Pleasanton Municipal Code (PMC)
to address this use.
PLANNING COMMISSION ACTION
At their December 8, 2010 meeting, the Planning Commission unanimously
recommended approval of the Code Amendments as outlined in Attachment 1.
RECOMMENDATION
Introduce the draft ordinance amending the Pleasanton Municipal Code as shown in
Attachment 1.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT
Community Development fees would apply for Planning entitlements and /or Building
permits; therefore, no fiscal impact on the City is anticipated.
