She was proud to be at the meeting this evening, as part of the democratic
process. She noted that if a citizen did not like what the Commission decided on a land
use issue, they had the right to appeal it. She noted that the attackers of the United States
would not care for that kind of process, and certainly did not have the opportunity to
come before a Commission like this. She believed it was important to be part of the
democratic process.

Commissioner Sullivan noted that he had attended the 9-11 commemoration at Veteran's
Memorial in Pleasanton, and added that he had attended another in San Francisco. He
noted that both were thought provoking. He wished to read a brief statement that he
wrote:

"Today is a day of grieving and remembrance for those who died or suffered on
this day last year. Our thoughts and hearts are with those people and their
families, but we should also not forget those innocent people who have died and
suffered since last September 11 th, and hope that we as a people can find a way
forward that leads to no further needless innocent deaths or suffering, and does
not sacrifice our freedoms in the name of security."

r-

Chairperson Maas asked for a moment of silence to remember the victims of September
11th. She dedicated the meeting to the victims of the September II, 2001 terror attacks.

PLANNING COMMISSION MINUTES

September 11,2002

Page I
