Fred Norman said the total death count since the Iraq and Afghanistan wars began is 5,739,
422 this year. This Thursday marks the start of the 10th year of war in Afghanistan. He urged
the Council and public to join Pleasantonians for Peace at its next vigil on October 13
Sarah Norr, Unite Here Local 2850, said it has been 7 months since the lockout of Castlewood
employees began. In September they learned that Castlewood is being prosecuted by the
National Labor Relations Board for failing and refusing to bargain in good faith with workers and
their representatives, and for interfering with, restraining, and coercing workers in the exercise
of their labor rights. The club has been extremely reluctant to even meet with her office, despite
their offer of numerous and regular bargaining dates, and Castlewood's proposals have moved
backwards rather than forward. The workers are committed to continuing to fight and still need
support from the community in honoring the picket line.
Francisca Carranza said she and other workers are here because they care about their jobs,
their families, and the City of Pleasanton. Castlewood has shown a distinct lack of consideration
for its employees, some of whom have worked there nearly 25 years. Workers have reached out
to club members and local businesses to aprise them of Castlewood's actions. They have
walked the picket line nearly every day and will continue to do so until club management
realizes they cannot be pushed aside. She requested the Council's and community's support.
Councilmember Sullivan said there are many in the community who support them and he looks
forward to the day that this Council honors working people like Ms. Carranza, just as it honored
business owners tonight.
Mayor Hosterman said the Council has declared its support of the Castlewood workers and
encouragement of the management to resume fair negotiations. They and the community
continue to support them and perhaps the backing of NLRB will move this along.
Karla Brown said she was surprised to read the Lin lawsuit had received an extension, and
requested the Council provide some clarification. She has heard discussions about the taking of
land and property rights, which sounds to her like the kind of discussion that would take place in
Closed Session. If it is not, she requested it be made public. Mr. Lowell stated that a minor
extension until November has been granted with respects to the Lin Family v. City of Pleasanton
in order to allow the City's outside counsel to come up to speed. Such extensions are typical in
litigation and are routinely granted. Other matters discussed in Closed Session do indeed need
to remain there and the Council is discouraged from discussing pending litigation publicly.
John Carroll reiterated Ms. Brown's concerns regarding the extension. He perceived the case to
be cut and dried, did not understand why additional time would be needed, and thought it
ridiculous that so much money is being spent on outside counsel.
PUBLIC HEARINGS AND OTHER MATTERS
13.
