MOTION: It was m/s by Thorne /McGovern to approve Consent Calendar as submitted. Motion
passed by the following vote:
Ayes: Councilmembers Cook - Kallio, McGovern, Thorne, Mayor Hosterman
Noes: None
Absent: Councilmember Sullivan
MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
11. Public Comment
Cathe Norman read the names of 5 American soldiers killed in Iraq and 16 American soldiers
killed Afghanistan since the last regular Council meeting; thanked Vice Mayor Thorne for his
moment of silence at the beginning of the meeting and pointed out that 1 of the 21 soldiers was
from Livermore, was wounded in 2008 and passed away in 2010. She invited everyone to join
the Pleasantonians for Peace at their next peaceful protest.
Fred Norman thanked Vice Mayor Thorne for his moment of silence and wished it could be done
at every meeting. He emphasized that while comments in his letter may have sounded harsh,
they were sincere. Today marks the fourth anniversary of his appearing before the Council and
more than 1700 American troops have died since in Iraq, over 1,000 in Afghanistan, and over
this time the Council has done nothing to stop it. He is not sure why nothing has been done,
offered potential reasons, and said he would continue in this quest.
PUBLIC HEARINGS AND OTHER MATTERS
12. Presentation of Holiday Shop Local Campaign
Director of Economic Development Pamela Ott gave the staff report and stated that the
Economic Vitality Committee and partnering business organizations have worked on the City's
Economic Development Strategic Plan. One of the goals is to strengthen Pleasanton's retail and
entertainment sector and initiative a Shop Local campaign, a citywide campaign at all local retail
centers. They are ready to launch the campaign whose theme is, "Shop Around Pleasanton ",
which highlights the multiple places in the community to shop during the holiday season and
beyond.
Ms. Ott indicated their research shows that holiday shop local campaigns do make a difference
and can be effective. She noted that m most innovative and timely about the campaign is the
use of Face Book as their platform
Vice Mayor Thorne said he is the liaison to the EDC, spent a lot of time watching the campaign
unfold, and cited the amount of energy in its implementation.
Councilmember Cook - Kallio said the literature did not mention restaurants, but it was included
on the Face Book page. Ms. Ott said they originally created the campaign thinking about
retailers because they would get the bulk of the holiday season. They know restaurants are a
key component, as well as other service businesses. They do not want to exclude anybody but
are gearing their initial outreach efforts toward retailers, then restaurants and additional
interested participants.
City Council Minutes
Page 3 of 10 September 21, 2010
