BACKGROUND
One of the goals during the conceptualization and design of the Firehouse Arts Center
was to comply with or surpass requirements for green design. In addition to many
features such as solar panels, etc., the Firehouse Task Force and the City desired to
provide bike racks to encourage alternate modes of transportation to the facility. Jill
Turman, the artist and blacksmith who had then designed the signage for the building,
was also commissioned to provide designs and scale models for several sculptural bike
racks which would be reviewed as possibilities for permanent installation at the
Firehouse Arts Center. On January 5, 2009, the Civic Arts Commission approved, with
several minor recommendations, Ms. Turman's designs for three (3) sculptural bicycle
racks for the Firehouse Arts Center. Staff presented the bike rack designs on February
12, 2009 to the Parks and Recreation Commission and on February 23, 2009 to the
Trails Ad Hoc Committee, both of which gave input and recommendation to proceed
with the three (3) designs. In consideration of budget constraints and in gauging the
preferred designs, staff decided to proceed with the two (2) designs which would be
most appropriate for the Firehouse Arts Center. On May 5' 2010, the two (2) models
were shown to the public and feedback was elicited during a Pleasanton Downtown
Association First Wednesday Event, with overwhelmingly positive comments.
If approved, the bike racks will be fabricated, delivered and installed by artist Jill
Turman. A location for one has been determined near the west entrance to the facility,
and an approximate location has been selected for the other near the park side
entrance. Each will be constructed of forged steel, and is distinct in color and shape.
They would be painted with numerous coats of industrial grade paint. The racks are
sculptural in quality, whimsical in nature, and evocative of the events and activities
related to the Arts Center and its surroundings. Each rack is sized and constructed
according to approved standards for bicycle racks. They will thus be both practical and
hold great design value at the same time. As such, the sculptural racks would become
part of the City's public art collection.
Submitted by: Fiscal Review: Approved y:
lg , ,
Susan Andrade -Wax Emily Wagner Nelson Fialho
Parks and Community Finance Director City Manager
Services Director
Attachments:
1.
