Fred Norman said Kevin Close is a friend of his and he thanked the Council for their <br /> remembrance of him. He then read the names of 34 soldiers who have died in Iraq and <br /> Afghanistan since May 4, 2010. <br /> Becky Dennis spoke of her support for Measure D. <br /> Alyssa Goard and Astra Lincoln, seniors at Foothill High School, thanked the City for supporting <br /> their class, We The People Competitive Civics Team. As the competition ended, the class <br /> decided it wanted to do something and put together civic engagement projects in the community <br /> and at the school. They organized a voter registration drive, encouraged peers to get out and <br /> vote, they examined every issue, visited every senior class and presented pros and cons of <br /> each issue, which included balanced arguments concerning Measure D. <br /> Mayor Hosterman said on behalf of the Council, she was proud of both students, said they were <br /> the city's future leaders, and she thanked them. <br /> Karla Brown referred to fundraising and how it affects campaigns. She said recently, information <br /> on Yes on Measure D became public on funds, and one person donated all of the funds. The <br /> amount of money spent year -to -date was $379,300. $192 of it was from a company Davies <br /> Public Affairs, who she found was a spin company focused on marketing. She described the <br /> company's pride as, "Davies makes what NIMBYs and Naysayers say irrelevant." She said she <br /> speaks strongly against Measure D. On the other side of the ballot are those voting no on <br /> Measure D, who have spent $6,000, did not have the ability to hire an outside firm, and most of <br /> their money went toward buying signs. She asked people to think about where the money is <br /> coming from before casting their vote and to vote no on Measure D. <br /> Kay Ayala encouraged citizens to mail in their vote by mail ballots and to be sure to vote on <br /> June 8` <br /> Mark McClellan, Engineer with McKay and Somps, noted his support for Measure D due to the <br /> open space it will provide. <br /> Karen DeBaca Martens thanked the Foothill High School students for their work and <br /> participation in the process, Councilmembers Sullivan and McGovern for their TV 30 airing and <br /> the many citizens who have commented that the airing made things clearer for them in voting no <br /> on Measure D. <br /> Kelly Cousins said June 8 is the opportunity to protect the city's ridgeline and hills and she <br /> hoped everyone reads and understands their ballot, she urged voters to vote no on Measure D. <br /> John Butera said he opposes Measure D and wants to preserve the open space. <br /> PUBLIC HEARINGS AND OTHER MATTERS <br /> 14. Public Hearing: Introduction of an ordinance approving sewer rates and amending <br /> Municipal Code Section 15.20.180 to place sewer fees in the Master Fee Schedule and <br /> adoption of a resolution approving water rates <br /> Director of Operations Services Daniel Smith said water and sewer rates were last changed in <br /> 2001.
