BACKGROUND
Along with adopting the required resolution associated with the November 2, 2010,
General Municipal Election, for the election of a Mayor for a term of two years and two
members of the City Council for a term of four years each, staff recommends that the
Council requests consent from the Alameda County Board of Supervisors for the
Registrar of Voters to render specific services to the City relating to the conduct of the
election and to consolidate with the Statewide General election.
State law also requires adoption of a resolution regulating candidate statements. The
Registrar of Voters has provided the City Clerk with an estimate of $1,117 for costs
associated with printing candidate statements in the Sample Ballot Voter Information
Pamphlet. This estimate is computed using the number of registered Pleasanton voters,
approximately 40,200. Of these voters, 39,887 receive ballot information in English, 271
request ballot materials in Chinese, and 42 request their ballots materials in Spanish.
Preparing and filing a candidates statement is optional, therefore it is recommended that
candidates wishing to print a statement pay the estimated fee at the time he or she files
nomination papers. After the election the City Clerk on a pro rata basis, will bill the
candidate for the actual expense or refund any excess paid depending on the final
actual cost.
Consistent with past elections and State law candidates will pay a $25.00 filing fee.
The nomination period for candidates opens Monday, July 12, 2010 and closes Friday,
August 6, 2010. In the event that an eligible incumbent does not file papers by 5:00 p.m.
on August 6, the nomination period will be extended for five days, until Wednesday,
August 11, for any qualified candidate except the incumbent.
Submitted m itted by: Fiscal Review: Approve by: LX__,CLINCIAYL)
Karen Diaz David P.
