The main goals of the group fall into the following categories:
Policy at the State and local level
Education Workforce development
Energy and energy efficiency
Alternative energy sources
Regional business formation strategies
Outreach and advocacy
Infrastructure
Best practices
Regional land use and transportation
The size and diversity of the group is growing which will be a positive factor in the
community's efforts to comply with AB 32 and develop a climate action plan in 2010 -11.
Sustainability Circles
The City was offered a unique opportunity last year to join the first beta sustainability
group formed in the bay area. The group was formed by Natural Capitalism Inc., group
of professionals that work in the international business community training and advising
companies and government agencies on how to be more sustainable. This group has
worked directly with Dr. L. Hunter Lovins, a world renowned expert in the field of
environmental and economic sustainability. The group consists of the City of
Pleasanton, The University of California at San Francisco Medical Center, New
Resource Bank of San Francisco, Give Something Back Office Supplies, Marina
Mechanical of San Leandro, and Hero Arts of Richmond. This very diverse group has
spent the last six months under the guidance of Dr. Lovins learning best sustainability
practices in lighting design and retrofit, HVAC design, water conservation, purchasing
and developing a business plan and culture to ensure success throughout an
organization.
In addition to the training and networking opportunities, the City will have a license to a
newly developed software package that is interactive and allows us to model and
analyze our facilities in the areas mentioned. There are five modules covering
everything from lighting to water conservation. The most important piece of the puzzle is
to develop the culture of sustainability through the City which will be a challenge in an
organization of 500+ employees. That phase of the training kicks off on April 28 with
the first group of Green Team employees (numbering 25) participating in this effort.
