BACKGROUND
Each year, 20 City employees participate in the City's "Leadership Academy."
Outstanding employees from throughout the City's various departments are selected to
receive advanced training in City operations, policies, and personal professional
development. The long -range goal for the Leadership Academy is to develop in -house
candidates for mid management and high -level management positions.
An important element of the Leadership Academy class is working together to
accomplish a culminating project. The 2009 class chose two: 1) the development of a
comprehensive on -going mentoring program; and 2) the design, creation and
installation of a public art piece entitled "Vision Cube." The three dimensional artwork is
a stainless steel /ceramic tile pedestal measuring approximately 3'x3'x2' in size.
Individual 12" ceramic tiles designed by each of the participants of the Leadership
Academy and were combined with steel framing to create a seat -high pedestal. Each
tile reflects each class member's thoughts about the Academy and his /her reflections
upon the City of Pleasanton. The class proposed that the pedestal be placed in the
planting area near the main entrance to 123 Main Street.
Leadership class members Jim Gotcher and Tom Fullam presented the project at the
May 4, 2009 Civic Arts Commission meeting and received unanimous support from the
Commission. The Commission's only suggestion was to enhance the colors in the tiles
during the firing process. Staff suggested that Mr. Gotcher and Mr. Fullam return to a
future Civic Arts Commission meeting to present the finished pedestal. The final project
was presented to the Commission on January 4, 2010 and was approved.
DISCUSSION
The Project Committee of the 2009 Leadership Academy asked each participant to
create an individual design for a tile that represents their feelings about Pleasanton,
which would be affixed to a sturdy framework and displayed with the other tiles as a
rectangular pedestal bench. Staff member Tom Fullam created the framework and
designed the pedestal to be rotated periodically in order to view all sides over time. The
proposed location was selected because the art piece will add color to an otherwise
relatively plain building entrance and there is enough space surrounding the piece to
allow for sufficient pedestrian access.
Submitted by: Fiscal Review: Approve by:
Susan Andrade -Wax avid P.
