BACKGROUND
On March 5, 2002, the City Council approved the establishment of a City Fine Arts
Lease /Purchase Program. The program is designed to enable the City to acquire high
quality, locally produced fine art, which can be displayed at City facilities, including the
future Firehouse Arts Center. Art eligible for lease /purchase is currently selected from
work by winners of the Civic Arts Commission Award for Artistic Excellence. One (1)
two- dimensional piece is chosen at each of two (2) venues: the Pleasanton Art
League's annual open exhibit, and the Alameda County Fair Art Show. The award
winning art piece selected by the Civic Arts Commission for the purchase /lease program
is then leased for a period of three (3) months, and displayed at City Hall. Public
comment is taken, with the Civic Arts Commission making a final recommendation to
the City Council regarding the potential purchase of the work.
On August 3, 2009, the Civic Arts Commission selected "Midnight on the Boulevard" by
Tricia Leonard, for the 2009 purchase /lease award. The artwork was then displayed at
City Hall and comment cards were available for residents to fill out. On December 7,
2009, based on positive feedback from the community, the Civic Arts Commission made
its final recommendation for the City to purchase the artwork.
Submitted by: Fiscal Review: Approve. ey:
o,,cL.r, tikes
Susan Andrade -Wax David P.
