45 <br />PEIT IT IONS RECEIVED <br />An application for permission to hold a dance on the night of <br />May 31 was received from the Rebekah Lodge. <br />/RECESS was ordered for examination of Claims and Reports. <br />ACTION ON CLAIMS: The meeting was again called to order, and on <br />motion of Councilman Hansen, seconded by Councilman Oxsen and <br />approved by all Councilmen present, it was ordered that Claims <br />Nos. 643 to 670 incl., amounting to 41,866.06 be paid as presented.. <br />ACTION ON REPORTS: All Officers' reports were approved and <br />ordered filed. <br />ACTION ON COMMUNICATIONS: All communications were ordered filed. <br />ACTION ON PEITIONS: Application of the Rebekah Lodge to hold a dance <br />on May 31 was approved. <br />THE MAYOR then called on .Mr. Davis of the County Health Dept. who <br />advised that after investigation it had been necessary to declare <br />the Thiessen property on Main Street unfit for human habitation. <br />Mr. Wyatt of the State Housing Commission reported that he had <br />ordered the building vacated 5 weeks before, but the order had been <br />ignored and repair work was still being carried on improperly and <br />without a permit. <br />COUNCILMAN MEZZA arrived at the meeting at this point, at 9:25 P.M. <br />THE COUNCIL were in agreement that repair work at the Thiessen proper- <br />ty must be stopped until all health and safety requirements were <br />complied with and that Mrs. Thiessen be cited to appear before the <br />Council at 7:30 P.M. on May 9 to work out a solution to the problem. <br />MR. DAVIS also stated that Supervisor Stanley had requested him to <br />ask what action had been taken relative to ascertaining if the <br />proposed Remillard dump site could be acquired. Mayor Trimingham, <br />advised him that the acquisition of a dump site was a County problem <br />and not a. Town matter. John Amaral reported that he had contacted <br />the Remillard owners and they were not interested in selling any - <br />thing less than the whole tract of some 39 acres at X750 per acre <br />Councilman Mezza suggested that a dump site might be acquired from <br />the Kaiser Co: <br />COMMITTEE REPORTS: <br />STREETS AND BUILDINGS: Councilman Oxsen reported that the elm <br />trees would probably need spraying soon, and that Supt. of Streets <br />Medeiros would check and order the spraying when needed. He also <br />advised that an oiler was badly needed. Councilman Oxsen and Mezza <br />. were authorized to investigate and recommend the purchase of the <br />type of oiler best suited . to the Town's needs. The drawings sub- <br />mit ted by the County Surveyor for improvements on Pleasanton Ave. <br />were approved with a recommendation that the sidewalk be installed <br />to Bernal Ave. and that all drainage ditches be covered. <br />CITY HALL AND FIRE DEPT: Councilman Hansen recommended that the <br />Town pay one half of the cost of turnout pants and boots purchased <br />by the Fire Dept. He was authorized to have the water heater at the <br />Fire House replaced if necessary. Fire Chief Amaral suggested that <br />the Town have a clean up week to encourage property owners to clear <br />grass from lots and sidewalks to eliminate the fire hazard from <br />these sources. The Clerk was instructed to request the Times to <br />print an item requesting cooperation from the public in clearing <br />their lots and sidewalks. <br />PUBLIC UTILITIES: Councilman Mezza reported that the sewer on-Ray <br />Street had been found to be broken and that repairs had cost ap- <br />proximately 4i3805 plus 4200 for a new manhole. This cost had been <br />further segregated to ascertain how much had been spent for cleaning <br />the tallow dumped in by the MaS1ow Cooperage Co. He also reported <br />that propagations had been made to clean the sewer farm tank and <br />
