Transmit ''in lieu" tax payment <br />PETITIONS RECEIVED: <br />Applications for dance permits•were received from the Druid's <br />Circle for the night of Feb.. 8 and from the American Legion for <br />the night of Feb. 15. <br />RECESS was ordered for examination of Claims and Reports. <br />ACTION ON CLAIMS: The meeting was again called to order and on <br />motion of Councilman Hansen, seconded by Councilman Mezza and ap- <br />proved by all Councilmen, it was ordered that Claims Nos. 547 to <br />578 incl., amounting to 02,241.16 be paid as presented. <br />ACTION ON REPORTS: All Officers' reports were approved and ordered <br />filed. <br />The Mayor then called on a group of young men who were present. <br />They stated that they were present as interested observers of Govern- <br />ment and had nothing in partioular to present. <br />Mr. Jack Marsh addressed the Council and requested their coopera- <br />tion in securing permission to use the Grammar School grounds for a <br />public baseball team. Members of the Council expressed sympathy <br />with the proposal and Councilman Oxsen advised Mr. Marsh that an <br />answer to his request was being delayed by failure of the District <br />Attorney and the Supt. of Schools to give a ruling on the matter. <br />ACTION ON COMMUNICATIONS: The Clerk was instructed to advise Mr. <br />Longson that present indications were that the proposed street work <br />would be done by the County and that the engineering work would be <br />performed'by the County Surveyor. <br />ACTION ON PEITITIONS: Applications of the Druid's Circle and of the • <br />American Legion for permission to hold dances on the nights of <br />February 8nand. 15 respectively were approved.- <br />COMMITTEE REPORTS: <br />LAWS AND JUDICIARY: Councilman Brenner reported that Alfred Avilla <br />had been hired for the Police Dept. He stated that the County was <br />taking women prisoners to Santa Rita and requested that the Clerk <br />write to Sheriff Gleason and request permission to hold the Town's <br />women prisoners there. He advised that the WPRR was willing and <br />ready to pay for their proposed curb and gutter work on Pleasanton <br />Avenue as soon as the County informed them as to the amount. <br />Councilman Brenner was granted permission to leave the State for a <br />period of three weeks late in the month. <br />STREETS AND BUILDINGS: Councilman Oxsen reported that he had re- <br />ceived conflicting reports as to the condition of the street sweep- <br />er for sale by Fred Kennedy and further investigation would be <br />necessary. He also reported damage to pavement caused by a dozer <br />and a shovel used on an excavation at Gale and Angela Sts. Attorney <br />Nilson advised that the owner of the property being excavated should <br />be billed for the cost of repairs. Councilman Oxsen suggested that <br />a survey of sidewalks be made and that property owners be requested <br />to repair All damaged walks. The failure to comply with building <br />regulations at the Frudden store building was discussed and it was <br />decided to contact Pete Madsen to—determine when he expected to <br />
